Getting to Washington Island, Wisconsin

For out-of-towners, getting to Washington Island will require a little bit of patience. But you’ll be rewarded by a beautiful drive to the Northport Pier on the tip of the Door County Peninsula, where you and your car will cross over to the island on the Washington Island Ferry.

Quick but important note: If you’re navigating with GPS, you should enter “Northport Pier” into the search and select the option that says it’s located in Liberty Grove, WI.

Driving Distances to Northport Pier from Nearby Cities

When planning your travel, especially if you are flying in, be sure to factor in the driving distance from your arrival point to the ferry departure point. Getting to Northport Pier will take you:

  • about 6 hours by car from the Twin Cities.
  • about 2 hours by car from the Green Bay airport.
  • about 3.5 hours by car from the Milwaukee airport.

No matter how you’re planning to arrive, please plan your travel so that you arrive in Northport in time to catch the ferry to Washington Island (see below).

Crossing on the Ferry

Be aware that the Washington Island ferry departs from Northport Pier at the tip of Door County, Wisconsin. It runs from the mainland to the island on the hour from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily,* and from the island to the mainland every day on the hour between 7 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The ferry ride between Washington Island and Northport Pier lasts about 30 minutes.

* Earlier information included additional ferry departures to Washington Island after 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. We’ve since learned that the ferry hasn’t scheduled those trips this season. Let us know if the change impacts your plans, and we’ll do everything we can to help.
