Where to Drink
Of the locations above, several are also great places to drink. Fiddler’s Green and K.K. Fiske, in particular, are good options when you’re thirsty. Here are a couple other choices:
Nelson’s Bitters Pub
1201 Main Rd.
Washington, WI 54246
(920) 847-2496
In addition to being an historical landmark, c. 1899, Nelson’s Bitters Pub is also famous for the Bitters Club, for which the price of entry is throwing back a shot of Agnostura bitters. This bizarre practice dates to the 1920s, when bitters (which were considered medicine, not spirits) represented a loophole in Prohibition law.
Selling bitters allowed the original owner to keep the pub open during Prohibition, making Nelson’s the longest continuously operating tavern in Wisconsin — and the world’s leading consumer of Agnostura bitters.
Nelson’s Bitters Pub is open from 11 a.m. – 2 a.m.
Karly’s Bar
1265 Main Rd
Washington Island, WI 54246
Karly’s bar serves cocktails, beer, wine, ice and “package goods.” It features lots of open-air patio seating, and has a small lunch menu for the day drinkers.
